6 Massage Etiquette Tips for Clients

As massage therapists, we are privileged to be able to help others through our work. However, that doesn’t mean it’s easy as an insider. As a client, you know that any service you receive is going to be beneficial in some way. It might be nerve-wracking at first but even the best massage can have its awkward moments. An unspoken code of conduct exists when interacting with a professional masseur. Read on for some helpful tips regarding your next massage appointment and how to make the most out of it.

Don’t be late

If you’re late for your massage session, your masseur will likely be annoyed. Most massage therapists charge a fee for every minute that you’re late, so you could incur a hefty bill. If you’re running late because of an emergency, let your masseur know as soon as possible. Most therapists will understand. However, if you’re late because you took longer to get ready than you should have, you may be given a short-notice cancellation fee.

Don’t be shy about communicating your preferences

If you’re new to the world of massage, you might not know how to ask for the type of massage that you prefer. Some people prefer a light massage that focuses primarily on relaxation, while others want a more intense massage that focuses on the muscles. You don’t have to feel uncomfortable asking your massage therapist to change the pressure if you’re uncomfortable.

Let the Therapist Know If Something Doesn’t Feel Right

As with any other medical professional, you may be hesitant to speak up if something is wrong or doesn’t feel right. Your massage therapist is trained to help you, but they can’t read your mind. Let them know if a certain pressure doesn’t feel right or if an area is too sensitive. You might be surprised at how many clients are afraid to speak up during a treatment. This can be especially true during a deep tissue massage. You may be apprehensive about letting your massage therapist know you don’t like something. However, it is better for you and the rest of your massage experience if you speak up. Your therapist may not realize that you are in pain. Alternatively, they may be able to change their technique to help you feel better.

Ask questions if you don’t understand anything

If you’ve never been to a massage before, you might be confused about what’s happening at any given moment. It’s normal to feel this way. If you don’t understand something, you can ask your massage therapist to explain it to you. Most therapists will be happy to clear up any confusion for you.

Don’t touch the masseur

You may wonder what the proper protocol for touching your masseur is. Unfortunately, there is no clear-cut answer to this question. Some massage therapists like to be touched very lightly, while others prefer you to keep your hands completely still. It’s important to ask your masseur what they prefer before you make any sudden movements. Generally, touching is allowed for a sensual massage, but let the masseur give you permission to touch, or ask him if he’s comfortable with touch.

Mention any problem areas beforehand

If you have certain problem areas that you’re hoping to get worked on during your massage, it’s a good idea to mention them beforehand. If your massage therapist is good at what they do, they might be able to work on those problem areas without you having to ask. Massage is a great way to relieve stress and feel better both physically and mentally.

These tips will help you to get the most out of your next massage appointment.
